Crypto trades 168 hours a week and US stocks 32.5. What that means for a paper bot test, five checks before you pick a tool, and which option fits you.

There is no single best AI paper trading bot for both markets, but the right one runs crypto and stocks on live prices with simulated money, follows each market's own hours, and shows why every trade happened. Check the hours first: crypto trades 168 hours a week and the regular US stock session only 32.5, so the same bot gets about five times more chances to trade Bitcoin than a stock.
The NYSE core session runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern, five days a week, while crypto never closes. That gap decides how fast a paper test gives you an answer.
Hypothetical example. One bot checks the market on every 1-hour candle and opens a trade on 1 check in 20.
| Market | Hours open per week | Hourly checks per week | Trades per week | Weeks to 100 trades |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crypto (BTC) | 168 | 168 | 8.4 | about 12 |
| US stock, regular session | 32.5 | 35 | 1.75 | about 57 |
The stock count is 35, not 32.5, because the last half hour of each day forms its own short candle.
Same rules, same settings. The crypto test reaches 100 trades in about three months. The stock test needs more than a year. If you compare the two after four weeks, you are comparing roughly 34 crypto trades with 7 stock trades, and 7 trades tells you almost nothing. How many paper trades a test needs has the worked ranges.
Two ways to close the gap: give the stock bot a longer test, or run it on more than one stock so the trade count adds up.
| You want | Option | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| To place paper trades by hand on charts | TradingView paper trading | Simulated orders you place yourself. Pine scripts can add signals, but you write the rules. |
| To code your own bot | Alpaca paper trading API | Free for all Alpaca users, US stocks and crypto, through an API. You write and host the bot. |
| A bot without code, on both markets | TradingWizard | Pick a market and an asset, set up a bot, and watch what it does. Each bot shows what it read, why it traded or waited, and when it checks next. |
In TradingWizard a stock bot shows "Market closed" outside the session and says when it reads again, while a crypto bot keeps scanning on its own timeframe. Demo trades use simulated money. No real orders are sent.
Alpaca's own documentation lists what its paper engine does not simulate: slippage from latency, market impact, queue position, price improvement, regulatory fees and dividends. Large paper orders can also fill even when that much size was not on offer. Other paper engines have their own gaps, so read the list for the tool you use.
For stocks there is one more: the weekend gap. Bitcoin can move 5% between Friday's close and Monday's open while the stock bot sits still. When the stock opens away from Friday's price, a stop placed on Friday fills at the opening price, which can be well past the stop.
Start one demo bot on BTC and one on a stock in Wiz, then count by Friday how many times each one read the market.
